The Origins of Sanger’s Senior Center – A Vision and a Legacy

Sanger’s Senior Center had been a vital part of the community for years. Originally called the Sullivan Senior Center, it was Sanger’s first senior gathering place, made possible by a legacy gift from the prominent Sullivan family.
Ms. Eunice Sullivan Gray saw the need for a space for seniors and proposed that the family donate the property in Sanger, owned since the early 1900s, to establish the Center. In 1985, Nelson Gambill Sullivan donated the estate to the city, honoring his late parents, Dr. John M. Sullivan and Charlotte Gambill Sullivan, and his brother, John L. Sullivan. The donation established the Sullivan Senior Center as a dedicated gathering site for seniors.

The Sullivan Senior Center came with Challenges

After accepting stewardship, the City of Sanger quickly renovated the property. The Center soon became a hub for seniors, hosting social gatherings, bingo, potlucks, and more. Over time, the Sullivan Senior Center experienced more structural deterioration associated with a building over 100 years old and lacked full ADA compliance, necessitating repairs and accessibility upgrades.

A New Era for Sanger’s Senior Community

In mid-2024, the City of Sanger sought estimates for necessary repairs to the Sullivan Senior Center. The First Baptist Church kindly hosted senior programs from early 2024 until late fall 2025. When the Sullivan Family Estate noted that the center was no longer being used exclusively for seniors, as required by the deed, it notified the city that ownership would revert to the estate. In response, the City Council quickly found a new location, purchased a facility for senior activities, and the Senior Center Board renamed itself and the new building to become the Sanger, TX Senior Center to demonstrate continued support for the community.

Arrival of the New Facility and Looking Forward

During the week of Thanksgiving in 2025, components for the new Sanger facility arrived at the corner of Bolivar and 2nd Street, just across from the original location of the senior center. The Sanger Tx Senior Center Board looks forward to restoring the vibrant and welcoming atmosphere that has long been part of our history. The Board remains dedicated to continuing this tradition and providing a new home for the community’s seniors to gather and thrive.
